A nationally owned oil and gas company was faced with over 12,000 “excess” personnel, due to the integration of four formerly independent affiliates. National laws and economics prohibited any large-scale downsizing. Jess Dods led 20 internal teams that created a shared-services organization with the excess employees to provide internal and external services. A senior-level pharmacy research scientist was recruited from another pharmaceutical company. Carol was assigned to manage a global resource team for the further development of a particular class of drugs. She had several peers working on other classes of drugs, with varying objectives.
